This week I’m mixing it up—audio instead of video. I was feeling a bit blah camera-wise, so I decided to go with my gut… write and then record. This one is also more educational. I’ve been feeling this pull to deep-dive on all things body-mind connection (mindfulness, body literacy, nervous system regulation, emotional regulation, somatics, etc.) for the female body. Let me know what you think in the comments. 💗
I had spent years working to figure things out intellectually.
Thinking my way through.
Pushing past discomfort.
Analyzing my way to clarity.
But no matter how much I thought, I still felt stuck.
My body felt like it was under siege—tired, tense, disconnected from joy and meaning. My mind was loud—looping constantly. I was disconnected, even from things I cared about.
What finally helped wasn’t mindset work or productivity hacks—it was learning how to listen to my body and regulate my nervous system.
And that shift? It became the foundation for designing a life I really wanted—not just a life I could manage or thought I “should” live.
the quiet force shaping how you feel
Every moment, your nervous system is scanning your environment to determine whether you're safe or in danger. This process happens below your awareness.
It's called neuroception—and it affects everything:
how you feel
how you connect
how you lead
how you make decisions
what actions you take
When your nervous system perceives safety, you enter what’s called a ventral vagal state—a sense of connection.
This is when you're most aligned with your values. You feel grounded, curious, present, and creative. You make intentional choices. You’re able to access the parts of yourself that want to learn, love, take risks, and lead.
But when your nervous system perceives threat (even subtle or chronic ones), it shifts into the protection state. This can look like:
Fight/flight: urgency, overthinking, control, defensiveness, irritation
Freeze/fawn: shutdown, numbness, fatigue, self-doubt, people-pleasing, indecision
You’re not broken. You’re responding to your body’s perception of safety.
a journey through your nervous system states
I want you to imagine a colorful inner world that represents your nervous system states. Picture a horizontal spectrum with three distinct zones... like a journey across different landscapes of your inner world.
Looking at this spectrum from left to right, on the far left is a deep blue zone with a person sitting on an iceberg, doomscrolling. This represents your Dorsal Vagal state—what researchers call the "immobilization" system, but you might know as the freeze, fawn, or shutdown response.
When this state hits, you can't fight or flee; you simply shut down.
You might feel numb, foggy, or completely exhausted. This often shows up when you're feeling overwhelmed by work demands, constantly behind, or burned out from pushing too hard to meet high standards. You might find yourself scrolling social media mindlessly, binging shows, isolating yourself, or using food or drinks to soothe emotions.
Reflect for a moment.
Do you recognize when you slip into this iceberg state? Perhaps, after a long week of back-to-back meetings. Or when facing uncertainty about your career direction.
This dorsal vagal state is actually your oldest survival mechanism, evolved long before fight or flight. While sometimes necessary, getting stuck here can lead to disconnection from yourself and others.
Moving to the center of your inner landscape, we see a beautiful turquoise-blue zone. A woman is floating peacefully in calm waters. This represents your Ventral Vagal state—what Polyvagal Theory calls your 'social engagement system.' I call it Connection.
Imagine this as a calm, crystal-clear sea where you float effortlessly.
In this state, you feel connected, creative, calm, curious, present, joyful, and compassionate. Your thoughts flow smoothly, your breathing is deep and even, and you navigate life's currents with resilience. This is where you can access your intuition and make decisions from a place of confidence rather than fear.
This is where we want to be most of the time... this is what connects to that outer success AND inner fulfillment.
So ask yourself...
When do I naturally find myself in this turquoise state? Is it when I’m engaged in work that aligns with my values? When connecting with people who appreciate my unique skills and perspective? What else?
Continuing to the right side of your inner landscape, we reach a vibrant orange zone. Here we see big waves with a cool surfer chick surfing, and a bright sun overhead. This represents your Sympathetic state—what researchers call your 'mobilization' system, but you might know as your 'fight or flight' response.
Imagine a storm is coming. The sea's gentle waves have become big ones... the surfing kind. Your body's on high alert, ready for action. Your heart races, your breathing quickens, muscles tense up, and your mind races with anxious thoughts.
In work terms, this often shows up as that feeling of being constantly "on," checking email first thing in the morning and last thing at night, saying yes to projects when you're already overloaded, or feeling that persistent worry that you're not doing enough, not being enough.
You probably do the equivalent outside of work, too.
Take another moment now to reflect.
When was the last time you felt these signals in your body? Was it before a presentation? During a difficult conversation with a coworker, friend, or loved one? When facing a tight deadline? Starting side project after side project.
This orange state isn't inherently bad. It evolved to help you respond to challenges. But when you stay here too long, this state eats away at your energy reserves, actually accelerating biological aging at the cellular level.
Here's what's important to understand:
Your nervous system isn't broken. It's doing exactly what it evolved to do.
Many environments today are like one big dysregulated nervous system. At work, constant urgency, pressure to hit targets, fear of falling behind, and perfectionism keep you stuck in survival mode.
The same could apply for living in a capitalist system. Making more money to buy more things. Living off credit. Competing for that Insta lifestyle image.
Ultimately, this isn't about lacking willpower or needing to "push through." Your body is giving you important signals that something needs to change. And while changing massive systems takes time, you can start with yourself.
why the nervous system matters for dream life design
The life you want to create—more presence, more ease, more fulfillment—demands access to the part of you that feels safe enough to imagine and pursue it.
Without that safety, your system will default to self-protection, even if it means holding you back from your dreams.
You can’t dream boldly when your nervous system is stuck in survival mode.
You can’t access your deepest desires when you’re just trying to get through the day.
You can’t build a life you love if your body doesn’t feel safe enough to believe it’s possible.
This is why nervous system regulation is foundational for dream life design.
Not a luxury. Not a bonus. A prerequisite.
what I see in so many high-achieving people
My clients are thoughtful, accomplished people with rich inner lives and deep values. They’ve achieved external success—but internally, they’re exhausted, stressed, and stuck.
They say things like:
I’m so in my head all the time.
I can’t turn off.
I feel anxious.
I’m afraid of failure and being judged.
Work fills every part of my life. When it goes well, I feel really great. When it doesn’t, I don’t. It affects everything.
I can’t let go of negative criticism. I spiral asking, “Am I good at my job?”
My dream life isn’t realistic.
And the number one: I’m not ______ enough.
They’re constantly in motion, driven by a sense of pressure or fear they can’t quite name. Life starts to feel like a loop of working, pushing, and recovering from the push.
Many describe waking up feeling heavy, carrying stress into their relationships, and feeling like no matter how hard they try, they’re not doing enough. They want to show up more present and energized in all parts of life, but they’re caught in a pattern of doing more and feeling less.
Yet, they all know something more is waiting for them.
You’re not procrastinating or self-sabotaging.
You’re protecting yourself in the only way your nervous system knows how.
through a nervous system lens
Here’s what’s actually happening:
When you’re in a protective nervous system state—even subtly—your body is saying “not safe.” So your thoughts, decisions, and behaviors organize around protection and control—not creativity, connection, or joy.
This shows up as:
Overanalyzing
Deferring decisions
Seeking reassurance
Tightening your grip—control
Disconnecting from your body
Delaying your dreams out of fear they won’t work
Looping in perfectionism, over-preparing, or never feeling ready
But when you shift into a more regulated, connected state, something opens.
You start to feel micro moments of calm. Of presence. Of contentment.
You start making decisions from self-trust rather than self-doubt. You access your creativity and intuition. You stop grasping and start aligning.
And that’s where the work begins—not by forcing change, but by learning to feel safe in your own body again. To surrender to change and expand.
how you start designing a life you f*cking love
First, let’s get bold. Let’s swear. Swear because you’re so f*cking excited to craft your dream life.
Seriously, go to your mirror and proclaim, “I’m designing a dream life I f*cking love!” Get psyched. Play. Laugh. This process should be fun!
Second, build body literacy and regulate your nervous system. When you do that, your entire life changes—not because you do more, but because you relate to everything differently.
How? Begin with a body scan—here’s the free body-mind mapping guide to, well, guide you.
a few signs you’re shifting into alignment
How will you know it’s working?
You start to notice your body speaking to you. You pause and choose how you want to respond. You act from a place of clarity. Respond instead of react.
You stop abandoning yourself in pursuit of success. You respect your deeper needs. You begin to imagine things going right.
This is when your dream life design becomes possible.
From a regulated state, your nervous system is no longer bracing—it’s imagining, creating, and expanding. That’s the version of you that can choose what matters and build a life around it.
Many of my clients describe results like these:
I feel more steady. I’m not getting hijacked by the same thought loops.
I have a clear way to check in with myself now. I’m more grounded.
I actually enjoy my life again—even when it’s messy.
I feel joy and self-compassion in ways I didn’t think were possible.
I don’t need to prove anything anymore. I trust myself now.
One of my clients described her adventure beautifully.
When we met, she felt anxious and impatient. By the end, she was calm and curious. She began treating her body with care—whole foods, exercise, and quality sleep—which gave her more energy. She learned to notice tension, breathe through it, and relax the body. This presence helped her decision-making, her values guiding her rather than external pressure. Though the idea of abundance still felt scary, she built trust in the process through mindfulness, nervous system regulation, and her Unbounded Self. She gained clarity on her entrepreneurial ambitions and felt confident about a future that once felt terrifying.
Another client found clarity and momentum by learning to listen deeply to her body’s signals and trusting her unique path.
She struggled with uncertainty about her professional direction and burnout, but coaching helped her recognize that it was the job—not the profession—that drained her. She learned to identify what brought her joy and started working toward a new path, even while between jobs. She developed steadier bodily awareness, noticing sensations that signaled when she needed to pay attention. Her priorities shifted toward trusting the path and valuing presence in everyday moments, like connecting with nature and her dog.
this is what we work on in coaching
In our sessions, we don’t reverse engineer your vision and go after it. You already know how to achieve goals. Instead, we start within, bringing curiosity and compassion to the body’s responses.
We practice:
Building interoception skills—your awareness of internal sensations, so you can spot when you’re entering a dysregulated state
Learning your protection patterns—so you can recognize them without judgment
Creating micro-moments of regulation—so your body learns what safety feels like
Exploring your values, needs, and deeper desires—not from your head, but from your body’s felt sense of alignment
Designing your potential paths—with embodied design thinking
And over time, you build the capacity to stay with yourself—even in uncertainty. You stop spiraling. You start making aligned decisions. You return to who you are. You act boldly.
